The one thing to remember

Pets are welcome along the Grand Strand, but beach access is seasonal and a leash of 7 feet or less is always required. In the off-season (roughly Labor Day–April 30) dogs can be on the beach anytime; in summer they are limited to early morning and evening, and the exact windows vary by city.

It’s time to give your four-legged best friend the vacation they deserve. Many Grand Strand hotels and vacation rentals are pet-friendly, and plenty of restaurants offer outdoor seating where your pet can join you. Pets are welcome up and down the coast — just be sure you know the local beach rules, which vary by city and change with the seasons.

Horry County (unincorporated beaches)

Dogs can be on the beach any time after Labor Day through April 30. Between May 1 and Labor Day, dogs are allowed only before 10 a.m. and after 5 p.m. All dogs must be on a leash no longer than 7 feet, and owners must clean up after their pets. Horses are only allowed in unincorporated areas.

City of Myrtle Beach

Dogs are allowed on the beach any time between Labor Day and April 30. Between May 1 and Labor Day, dogs are allowed before 10 a.m. or after 5 p.m. A leash no longer than 7 feet is always required. Dogs are not allowed on Ocean Boulevard between 21st Ave. N. and 13th Ave. S. at any time from May 1 through Labor Day, and dogs are not permitted at any special event. Horseback riding on any beach within the city limits is not permitted.

City of North Myrtle Beach

Dogs are allowed on the beach any time September 16 through May 14. From May 15 through September 15, dogs are allowed before 9 a.m. and after 5 p.m. All dogs must be on a leash no longer than 7 feet at all times. Horseback riding is not allowed on the beach within North Myrtle Beach city limits.

Tips for a happy beach day with your pet

  • Bring water and a bowl. Sand, salt and sun are dehydrating for pets, too.
  • Watch for hot sand and pavement. Midday surfaces can burn paws — test with your hand first, or stick to early and late hours.
  • Rinse off afterward. A quick freshwater rinse removes salt and sand from fur and paws.
  • Clean up every time. Carry waste bags and pack out what your pet leaves behind.
  • Keep the leash on. A leash of 7 feet or less is required on every Grand Strand beach, even during off-peak hours.
  • Never leave a pet in a parked car. Temperatures climb dangerously fast, even with the windows cracked.
