Red, White and Safety First this July 4th

As Independence Day approaches, the Myrtle Beach area is gearing up to welcome residents and visitors for a festive and safe celebration. Firework displays and patriotic festivies are planned throughout the Grand Strand from Cherry Grove to Murrells Inlet.

Watching a public fireworks show is recommended rather than setting off your own fireworks. In fact, in many areas of the Grand Strand, it’s illegal to light off fireworks without a permit. Each municipality has specific guidelines and regulations to ensure that everyone enjoys the holiday responsibly. It’s important to know which part of the beach you are in to know the local regulations.

For example, in the City of Myrtle Beach, fireworks are allowed on private property between 7:00 a.m. and 10:00 p.m., with the property owner’s permission. On July 4th and New Year’s Day, the permissible time extends until 12:30 a.m. However, discharging fireworks is strictly prohibited on the beach and all public properties at any time. Violations incur a $250 fine for the first offense and $500 for subsequent offenses within the same year.

Additionally, it’s illegal everywhere to aim or throw fireworks toward people, animals, structures or vehicles, including golf carts. Additionally, discharging fireworks from a vehicle or within 500 feet of churches, hospitals or schools, and within 300 feet of gas stations or businesses selling flammable goods, is prohibited.
